Free Space Optic Communication: An Overview

Free Space Optic (FSO) Communication is an advanced wireless communication technology that uses light to transmit data through the air instead of traditional fiber-optic cables. Operating on the principle of optical line-of-sight, FSO systems employ lasers or LEDs to send information between two points across free space, enabling high-speed, secure, and cost-effective data transfer.

At its core, FSO communication works by converting electrical signals into optical signals, which are then transmitted through the atmosphere and received by a photodetector at the other end. Because it uses light waves in the infrared or visible spectrum, FSO can support extremely high bandwidths, often comparable to fiber-optic technology. This makes it a strong candidate for applications that demand fast data transfer without the need for physical cables.
